“The Farewell” is a hit of the Sundance Film Festival and another production success of the A24 company that became one of the top-grossing films of the year. The negative press reviews on the aggregator websites can be counted on one hand. Of course, the ordinary viewers couldn’t resist the sincerity of “The Farewell”, and the director of the movie, Lulu Wang, will probably be nominated for an Oscar. This is the rare case when the movie with a very modest budget gets the attention it deserves.
As indicated on the poster, this online movie is based on a real lie – this story actually happened to the American Lulu Wang and her grandmother living in China. We should give some credit to the novice director – she didn’t turn the plot into an ancient tragedy, but made it down-to-earth and mixed it with comedy. She pushed the dying grandmother to the background and focused on Billy- an insecure girl who is torn between two cultures and cannot decide on her future. A trip to her dying grandmother is a reason to pull herself together, get advice and determine her priorities in life.
